In 1932, she graduated from the Kyiv College of Planning and Economy. She started to publish her works in 1931. From 1932 to 1936, Khaikina was a fellow at the Institute of Jewish Proletarian Culture of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. She worked there until the Institute was reorganized into the Cabinet of Jewish Culture. During World War II, Dora was evacuated to Kustanay (Kazakhstan). She was married to the Jewish writer Ikhil Falikman (1911\u20131977). In 1993, she moved to Israel. Dora Khaikina died in Haifa in 2006.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dora Khaikina was the author of the poetic collections <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poems<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05dc\u05d9\u05d3\u05e2\u05e8, <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1941), <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poems and Ballads<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1941 ,<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05dc\u05d9\u05d3\u05e2 \u05e8 \u05d0\u05d5 \u05d1 \u05dc \u05d3\u05e2\u05e1<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From All My Roads<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05e4\u05d5 \u05dc\u05e2 \u05de\u05d9\u05d9\u05e0\u05e2 \u05d5\u05d5\u05e2\u05d2,<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 1975), collections of essays <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucia\u2019s Love<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05dc\u05d5\u05e6\u05d9\u05e2\u05e1 \u05dc\u05d9\u05d1\u05e2<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 1983) and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Letters to Future Generations<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1988 ,<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05d1\u05e8\u05d9\u05d5\u05d5 \u05e6\u05d5 \u05e6\u05d5 \u05e7\u05d5\u05de\u05e2\u05e0\u05d3\u05d9\u05e7\u05e2 \u05d3\u05d5\u05e8\u05d5\u05ea<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The archive holds manuscripts of writings, letters, documents, and tape recordings of reading poems (more than 1,050 units of storage overall).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Prose.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Even though Dora Khaikinha is known in the history of Jewish literature primarily as a poet, her creative legacy also includes prose writings. The archive has manuscripts of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the novel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humans Remain Humans: Notes of a Former Soldier<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Yiddish, no date, typewritten manuscript with handwritten edits);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the novella <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He Was My Teacher<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Russian, no date, typewritten);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an untitled article (Yiddish, no date, typewritten).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It remains unknown if all of the works present in the archive were published during the poet\u2019s lifetime. This issue requires an additional analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Poetry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the archive, there are manuscripts of Dora Khaikina\u2019s 129 poems translated to Russian and Ukrainian (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the Moment, When Our World was Created; In a Village, in the Magical Carpathians; I Know, the Seasons Change Every Year<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I Left All the Stars in the Sky<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and others; the dates are absent). Khaikina\u2019s poems were translated by Lesia Klymenko, Mykhailo Lytvynets, Valentyna Malyshko, Stepan Lytvyn, Mykola Lukiv, Petro Zasenko, Oleksandr Sharvarok, Abram Katsnelson, Dmytro Bilous, Ivan Drach, Naum Tykhy, Hanna Chubach, Petro Osadchuk, Oles Zholdak, Dmytro Pavlychko, and others. Researchers of Pavlo Tychyna\u2019s works can be interested in Dora Khaikina\u2019s Yiddish translation of his poem <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friend\u2019s Funeral<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These manuscripts can be useful for translators and those who study the theory and history of translation, as well as the scholars of Yiddish poetry of the second half of the twentieth century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Correspondence<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. More than 900 letters, postcards, and telegrams of the period from 1948 to 1992 (in Yiddish, Russian, Ukrainian and English) have been preserved. Since a considerable majority of letters have their envelopes, it is possible to determine almost all senders and addressees. Attributing some Yiddish letters that lack envelopes is a more complicated task.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 765 letters addressed to Dora Khaikina. A hundred and twelve of them are from family members: her husband Ikhil Falikman and son Dmytro. The archive also stores more than 20 letters from Khaikina\u2019s children (Zoia, Dmytro, and Samuil) sent to one another and their father. Although all these letters are mostly related to daily life topics, they can be of great interest for biographers of the literary couple.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A considerable part of the letters is related to Dora Khaikina\u2019s literary activity. Among her correspondents, there were the writers Oleksandr Lizen, Riva Rubina, Paola Utevska, Khaskel Tabachnykov, Note Lurie, Ivan Drach, Dmytro Pavlychko, Oles Honchar, and Pavlo Zahrebelny; editor of the newspaper <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birobidzhaner Shtern<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Boris Miller, editor of the magazine <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sovetish Heymland<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Aron Verhelis, poet, translator and literary scholar Lev Ozerov, literary activist and director of Kyiv State Jewish Theatre (GOSET) Moisei Loiev, and critic and publicist Hryhorii Helfandbein.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the archive, there are letters from editorial offices Dora Khaikina collaborated with (for example, of the magazines <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sovetish Heymland<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zhovten<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [October], <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kyiv<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Druzhba Narodiv<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [Peoples\u2019 Friendship], the newspapers <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birobidzhaber Stern<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leninska Zirka<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [Lenin\u2019s Star], and the publishing house Radianskyi Pysmennyk [Soviet Writer]) and greeting cards from the Ukrainian Writers Union.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The letters from Dora Khaikina\u2019s collection can be interesting for researchers who study the literary life of Jewish intellectuals in the Soviet Union in the late 1940s \u2013 early 1990s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Documents and private belongings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Literary scholars, historians, and documentalists may be interested in Dora Khaikina\u2019s original member cards of the USSR Writers Union (1938, 1953). There are concert programs, congratulatory cards, and a reproduction of Oleksandr Kerzhner\u2019s painting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sholom-Aleichem: The Dawn<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a gift from the author).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tape recordings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Dora Khaikina\u2019s poems (1969 and 1971) held in the archive require technical processing and re-recording to modern data carriers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dora (Debora) Khaikina (1913\u20132006) was a Yiddish poet.
